July 4th Means Independence…Freedom!

Why do we celebrate the 4th of July? One document made this celebration possible: The Declaration of Independence. One piece of paper began what some have called ‘the grand experiment,’ which is a population controlling its own destiny rather than a monarchy. A bold move to say the least.

A handful of men gathered to compose a document with one purpose – to declare our

rights as citizens AND the right to secure those freedoms. Since the King of England

had ceased to honor the basic rights of the colonists, they felt the only course of action

was to separate from England.

Two hundred forty-two years ago 56 men risked everything when their signatures

were penned on that document. What did they risk? Everything! Their homes and very

lives were at stake. Again, this was a bold move and one not made frivolously.

Are we bold enough to stand up for that document? To put our lives on the line as we

pass this document on to the next generation?

To teach the responsibilities that accompany such a document and ensure our continued freedom from tyranny? I was fortunate over a decade ago to visit the National Archives and see this single, faded piece of paper for myself. I cannot describe the emotion that bubbled up within

me. If you haven’t had the opportunity to make your way to the National Archives, I

suggest you treat yourself to the experience. You won’t regret it.

Have a happy and safe July 4th,2018!
